It was a pleasure to attend the Subcontinent Friends of Campbelltown Inc. Ekushe and International Book Fair 2026 on 14 February, marking International Mother Language Day. This multicultural organisation brings together members and volunteers from across India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, China, the Maldives, Turkey, Iran, the United Kingdom, Bangladesh and Pacific Island nations. A mother language carries far more than words. It holds memories, traditions, humour, faith and the everyday stories that define communities. Protecting these languages means protecting a living connection to culture and history. When children grow up hearing and speaking their family's language, they are not divided between identities. They can embrace their heritage while proudly calling Australia home. Books, gatherings and community events like this keep those languages alive across generations. They also strengthen understanding between cultures. By celebrating each other's languages, we deepen respect, friendship and social cohesion within our community. Thank you to Parvez Khan and everyone behind the scenes for putting this fantastic event together.
