I recognise the enduring courage and resilience of the people of Timor-Leste and the local Timor-Leste community, whose struggle for independence was marked by decades of hardship, conflict and international solidarity. I had the privilege of attending the celebration of the twenty-third anniversary of the Restoration of Independence of Timor-Leste recently in Canley Vale, along with my good colleague the member for Liverpool. Such events are vital in preserving Timor-Leste's rich history and acknowledging the sacrifices and achievements of a proud nation. The evening brought together members of the Timorese community, featuring a wonderful dinner, a captivating cultural performance by the Timorese United Association cultural group and live music by Os Varudo's Band. It was a moving and joyful occasion that highlighted the enduring spirit and vibrant culture of the Timorese people, reminding us of the importance of unity and the pursuit of freedom, especially in these times, when many struggle for independence.
